THE STEDMANS OF CORVEDALE REUNION

For some years now descendents of the Stedmans of the Corvedale have corresponded from around the world and shared information on their family tree. On 1st and 2nd August they gathered at Bucknell from all over the UK and from as far away as Australia, to meet each other at last, at a reunion kindly organised by one of their cousins, Sandra Lee.

They had a chance to investigate some family homes, including the White House in Aston Munslow, where Stedmans have lived since the 1500s, and ‘The Hall’, Bucknell where some of their ancestors lived more recently in Victorian times, where they were treated to a marvellous tea by Christine Price. They were fascinating to see the Stedman initials branded into the old wooden surrounds of the kitchen range, to imagine their lives in Bucknell and the area as evidenced in so many resources, and to find their graves in St Mary’s graveyard.

During their gathering they agreed to set up a website for their family history research, which they will shortly be advertising, and hope that other Stedman relatives will join them in what they have found to be a fascinating journey of discovery.

Sandra Lee has produced a book about the Stedman family. A few copies remain but there will probably be a reprint very soon. They cost £15.50 each, plus postage, and are in full colour throughout.  Contact the web master for further details.

TELLYTALK REMOTE DELIVERY INITIATIVE

TellyTalk is a new system designed to provide remote face to face access to services via a dial up television screen was formally opened at Green's Garage on the 8th April 2008.  Bucknell is one of the few rural communities to get this equipment and will provide face to face contact between the user and a number of authorities and organisations including Shropshire County Council, Age Concern, A4U (Benefits Advice), Citizens Advice and South Shropshire Housing Association via a touch screen system and will eventually include the following facilities:

• The remote scanning of customer documents;
• The electronic completion and remote printing of forms;
• An electronic signature and video snapshot/photograph;
• The reading of smart cards for pre population of forms;
• Linking a centrally based customer service Agent to the document management and Customer relationship management (CRM) systems;
• Customer biometrics verification.

What are the benefits of this system?
• TellyTalk enables the delivery of joined up services at a local level i.e. in more remote parts of the county, without the need for specialist staff to be present;
• No need for customer supervision at the point of access since the system has been designed for customer ease;
• It reduces the need for the customer to travel to access services;
• Improves customer relations since customers talking face to face with an officer and service times are shortened;
• Improves staff productivity by removing need to travel and by integrating

AN INTERESTING NIGHT ON THE LINE

 12th August 2007 saw a stoneblower progress slowly down the Heart of Wales line after the final train passed through.  The machine lifted the rail track and blasted stones into the void beneath the sleepers.  Progress was steady and spectacular.

FAMILY FUN DAY 2007

The afternoon of Saturday 2nd June saw a busy scene at Daffodil Lane for the Family Fun Day and Hog Roast.

To the organisers' immense relief the day was sunny and warm which encouraged a good turnout. The various classes in the dog show attracted many entries, the bouncy castle was very popular with the children and the cake stall did extremely good business.

Graham Cornes' ferret racing drew a large crowd and Keith Meredith's spinning wheel was also very popular.

The organisers were delighted and appreciative that the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service sent along their fire engine from Clun with its crew.

The hog roast itself, commissioned from Ken Dodd, was a great success and rounded off a Fun Day for All. Jean & Peter Pryke, Freda & Stan Hogg, Burwell Bowen and Ian Hay-Campbell were extremely grateful to all the willing volunteers who contributed to the day's success. And thank you too Ian for doing such a grand job as Master of Ceremonies.

Another steam train double hauled came through Bucknell on Saturday 22nd April 2007.  A special excursion train originating from Leicester hauled by 45427 "The Lancashire Fusilier" and 45231 "The Sherwood Forester" delighted everyone as it steamed slowly and majestically through the station en route for Knighton.

A special train from the East Midlands hauled by two locomotives from Crewe all the way to Newport, passed through Bucknell on Saturday 15th July 2006.
